Can You Repair a Windshield? What You Need to Know

Posted on

Fewer things are more frustrating than a rock hitting and cracking your windshield. Once this happens, you may wonder if you have to replace the entire windshield or just repair the damage. There are several considerations to look at before you decide. Here is what you need to know:

Can the Windshield Be Repaired?

You may be able to repair the glass instead of replacing it in certain circumstances. One of the first considerations is the depth of the damage. If the glass is completely penetrated, a repair may not be possible. If the crack or damage causes a long crack across a certain dimension of the windshield, you may also have to replace the glass. Any damage that is over a certain size cannot be repaired in most cases. Additionally, if the damage is in your field of vision as you drive, you may need to replace the windshield.

Are There Advantages to Replacing the Windshield?

There are some benefits to replacing a windshield, even if the damage can be repaired. Although the more expensive option, windshield replacement provides you with a sounder and more undamaged windshield. You will also be safer when you replace the glass, especially if the damage was done to the outer edge of the windshield. If you drive a vehicle with repaired damage in a vulnerable part of the glass, any small hit from a rock or other debris could completely shatter the windshield. When you opt for replacement, you will also have clearer visibility that may not happen if you choose to have the damage repaired, as repairs can often leave a scar behind.

Should You Try to Fix Your Windshield Yourself?

If you are short on cash and want to DIY a repair, proceed with caution. Although there are kits available that will repair small cracks in a windshield, this is not the best option. If the damage is in a certain area of the windshield, you could further damage the glass and cause the glass to shatter. Unless you have the proper tools used by professional windshield installation contractors, you will not be able to see the depth of the damage. The kit may not even work if the crack is too deep.

If you are unsure whether or not you should replace or repair a damaged windshield, the best thing to do is have it inspected by professionals. They will look at the damage and determine the best course of action for your safety and the integrity of your vehicle. If you need a windshield replacement, talk to an auto shop in your area.
